Vegan While Out: Legal Sea Foods, Washington, DC

My sissy popped in from Denver this last weekend for a last minute trip. Woohoo!

One of our cousins also came up for his first D.C. visit, so we had to take him around to check out the city.

After walking, talking, and goofing off for a few hours, we headed to Legal Seafood in Chinatown for dinner.  With so many vegan-friendly restaurants in DC, it wasn't my first choice, but majority rules when it comes to dining out in a group (it was 5 of us).

I've dined in Legal Sea Foods since becoming a vegan, so I wasn't concerned about being stuck with just French fries or a garden salad.

Vegetarian Box - Sesame soy stir-fried vegetables, Thai red coconut curry sauce, cashews, tofu and brown rice

My food was just so-so. They gave me too many onions, forgot the cashews, and my rice was overcooked.

Overall, we had a great time, so I wasn't too concerned about the food. I just appreciate Legal making it easy to be vegan in a seafood restaurant.

How was your weekend?

Vegan While Out: Jackson 21-Alexandria, VA

A couple of weeks ago, hubby and I stumbled onto Jackson 21 while walking around Old Town Alexandria.

I started off with a salad...

The salad on the menu included pig's ear and deviled eggs, so I asked our server to leave that out. I was left with sauteed radicchio & onion, arugula with other mixed greens, and a mustard vinaigrette.

Simple & delicious!

The main course was everything, though...

Northern Neck Stuffed Peppers with orzo, cherry tomatoes, broccoli rabe and romesco sauce-the original dish is topped with cheese but I also asked my server to leave that off.  She was very accommodating and made our dining experience that much better.

I vlogged about our day in the video below.  Check it out :-)

Vegan While Out: Fire Bowl Cafe-Denver, CO

 Denver is absolutely breathtaking!

I had an awesome birthday week in Denver & Colorado Springs with my sisters. The people were friendly and every restaurant we ate at had obvious vegan choices on the menu. One fondue restaurant (we didn't have a chance to dine here but I checked out the menu) even offered tofu & portobello mushrooms in place of chicken & beef.

I spent most of the trip "being in the moment" AKA wildin' out with my sisters, so I only took pictures of 2 meals the whole trip.

The first was a Chipotle burrito with crack rice (this stuff is too addicting not to be laced with crack), fajita, black beans, guacamole, and lettuce...

I side eye a $7 burrito & those crazy long lines but Chipotle is still my go-to spot when it comes to fast food.

We also had lunch one day at Fire Bowl Cafe.  The food was so fresh and the service was great.

Fried tofu salad...

Mixed greens, Asian slaw, rice sticks, tomato, cucumber, peanuts and cilantro and a tangy Asian dressing.

LOVED it!

I also enjoyed 2 Thai summer rolls with tofu, vermicelli noodles, lettuce, Thai basil, cilantro & carrots.

Good food, folks, and lots of laughs in Denver.

I can't wait to go back with the hubby and kids.

Vegan While Out: Pizza FAIL-With Vlog

I love date night and always feel like we just don't have enough of them.  We hung out in Arlington and had "pizza" at Vapiano. Pizza is in quotes because our pie was more like a cracker or breadstick than a regular pizza.

This experience is an example of why it's so important to be clear when omitting ingredients.  I ordered a regular pizza with garlic and tomatoes; not realizing the sauce was a goat paste. When I saw the cook bringing out the cheese paste, I asked him to skip the dairy and assumed he would use tomato sauce when we walked away. Umm, no. lol

This situation was totally my fault for not being clear with him.  Lesson Learned. lol

Next time I will save myself the hassle with a basic bowl of noodles and marinara sauce.

Here's a short vlog I did with clips from that night.  I'm working on my vlogging skills, so bare with the some of the lighting and angle issues.

Do you run into issues when ordering plant-based meals while dining out?

I Don't Like All Vegan Restaurants

sunflowerfrontjune2012.jpg

Hubby and I headed to Sunflower a few weeks ago for date night. I've been wanting to get back there since devouring their tofu & veggie sandwich a few months ago.

We started off with an avocado roll-it was just ok

Hubby ordered steamed kabocha, root vegetables & hijiki, burdock, tofu, rice, & curry rice.

I ordered tofu with noodles, carrots and mushrooms-the noodles were too soft and overall the dish was bland.

Dessert: Avocado Lemon Pie with a scoop of vegan ice cream-I don't know what the hell I was thinking when I ordered this. I love avocado and lemon, so I figured having them in a pie would rock. I think the consistency is what messed me up. It reminded me too much of Jello.

I always try to support vegan establishments but Sunflower just didn't do it for us.

The service was blah and the food just ok, so I highly doubt we will be back.

Next time I will let hubby pick the restaurant.
